This website provides free information and services about preventing flooding and flood protection.

Top tips for preventing flood damage:

  • Where possible install purpose built doors and windows
  • If possible, raise door thresholds
  • Use specially designed covers on air bricks and ventilation areas - automatically functioning ones are available
  • Fit non-return valves to water inlet and outlet pipes and drains
  • Avoid sewer backup
  • Use waterproof materials in construction finishing
  • If you are living in a flood prone area, it may be worth considering elevating your home
  • Raise floors and reaplce wooden floors with concrete
  • Re-landscape garden areas and driveways to divert water away from your property in the event of a flood
  • Barriers - barriers can be effective, but may be obsctructive when there is no flooding. There are many modern products on the market (more effective than sandbags) that can be more convenient.
