Dealing with Damage

This website provides free information and services about dealing with flooding and flood protection.

Top tips for dealing with flood damage:

  • Make sure the electricity is switched off. If the flooding is serious, do not turn the power back on until the system has been checked by a certified electrician
  • Do not use matches or any other type of flame until you're sure thre are no gas leaks
  • Destroy all fresh or frozen food, medicines or cosmetics that have been in contact with flood water, as they may have been contaminated
  • Take pictures of flood damage for insurance purposes
  • Use disinfectant to clean areas that have been affected by flood water
  • Use heating systems (once they have been checked for safety) to help dry the area out
  • Clean all clothing, linen, rugs, curtains etc as soon as possible
